What is the first color lost when diving?
The first color lost when diving is red. As you descend underwater, the longer wavelengths of light, such as red and orange, are absorbed more quickly by water than shorter wavelengths like blue and green. This phenomenon, known as selective absorption, causes red light to be filtered out, resulting in a loss of red color perception. Consequently, the underwater environment appears progressively blue-green as depth increases. Divers often use artificial light sources or specialized equipment to compensate for this loss of color and enhance visibility during their dives, particularly in deeper waters where natural light diminishes further.
